Once realizing her strength over men (including her own husband, who is now searching for her), Anna with her head throws into the wind of secular entertainment. But behind the glow of diamonds and the triumph of selfishness is a terrible fee hidden – the heroine becomes the same charity as the environment, thinly forgetting those for whom she was afraid. Chekhov with his own laconism and gorgeous irony shows the ambiguity of the name of the story: first the young wife was a heavy condition ("on the neck") in the old husband, and then Modest Alexeych himself and his career got into full dependence on the caprices of the world lion.
